This morning when I woke up all I heard was Angelina Jolie had a double mastectomy. I first thought it is a big deal for you and your family and you have done great benefit to other women and families that are dealing with similar tough choices but I could not help but think why is it such a big deal for everyone else? Then I was shocked to hear discussions on radio, social media and even at work about body image and how breasts are a symbol of being a female.
I am a full-time working mother of a four-year old daughter. I am also conscious about what I wear and how I look. So, I understand that women can feel concerned about other women’s looks. But the idea that looks take priority over health and life is just absurd and what is even worse is the notion that our womanhood only exist through our body. It is just based on ideologies of the society and the norms of beauty that are also set by our culture and sometime other women.
I want to be clear that I do not have a problem with Pop/Hollywood culture. I enjoy it and I want my daughter to enjoy it as well. In my opinion raising a confident women who is not just tied to body image does not mean that young girls and women should not look good or should not idealize women who work in appearance based professions. I actually want my daughter to always look her best, wear what she wants to wear and do what she wants to do in life as long as it makes her happy and healthy. I see too many young girls doing things and falling for things only to please others. It is once again due to unnecessary and false criteria of beauty created by culture of achieving perfection but somehow we all forget that the beauty is always in imperfection.
As women we all should know that our breasts or vagina’s do not define us and neither do our looks. Our beauty is in our brains and how we see beauty in others. So, kudos to you Angie for taking a swift action about your health; for yourself and your family and thank you for sharing it with the world. If we really want a society that regards women as strong individuals and not as a beauty objects then we need successful women to show that we are smart, successful, confident and Oh yes always beautiful as well.
